Now that I have my darkroom well and truly up and running, I’m slowly working through my box of negs with the intention of printing multiple copies of my favourites. I’ve also decided to track down as many of my subjects as possible and give each a print. During the red shirt occupation of the business district of Bangkok, I met these two practicing their takraw skills on the deserted streets of Patpong, so today, two years later, I drove down to find them. I asked a market trader if he’d seen either of the pair and less than five minutes later I was sat opposite Khun Tia having a drink and a chat. It turns out he’d worked for the same bar for nineteen years since moving to Bangkok from Isarn and apart from takraw trips to nearby Lumphini park had spent almost everyday at the bar. He hadn’t seen his partner Khun Piyawat for a number of months but was happy to pass on his print.

A portrait I took of Tia also features on the cover of BKK101 magazine which numerous customers had brought into the bar to show him.

I co-run a media studio where a group of students (aged 11-18) come to work on personal projects, collaborate and get feedback on creative ideas. The group is diverse and represented by animators, aspiring actors, film makers, screen writers, programmers and photographers. It’s a joy to see their creative paths cross and support them developing new skills whilst helping to realise their visions.

The Grade 7 group are working on a comedy short about a stolen gecko at present whci hthey hope to enter to the film festival (see below). Under my guidance, the media studio’s photographers met with them to design a poster for their film. I then brought my strobes in and we had a fine old time getting shots for the poster. I couldn’t resist having a go at putting the poster together myself…

The focus of this term’s studio has been the organisation of Bangkok Youth Film festival which has been set in motion as part of a Grade 12 student’s CAS project. Click here to find out more about the festival.

Thoroughly enjoying my darkroom but have a couple of issues with my neg carrier. The enlarger is a Kaiser V7000 series. The first problem is that the lower plate of glass which should sandwich the neg nice and flat and snug is missing – can I replace this with any glass?

The second problem is if you look at the scans of the prints included I am unable to get the full frame of a 6X6 neg (key line missing from from one side). The actual carrier is too small to include the whole neg even though it is a dedicated 6X6/ 6X7 enlarger.

What can be done?!
